“Life, indeed, has taken a sudden dramatic turn in the event of the present pandemic.”

said Mrs. Maria Urduja Galang, the SHS Principal of UST Angelicum. As a way to welcome another fruitful school year amidst the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, UST Angelicum College held the traditional Salubong last August 26, 2020, but this time, virtually. The pandemic may have postponed many scheduled events for this year, but the previous officers of the Student Council still made some of these events materialize for the entire student body.

A VIRTUAL WELCOME: UST Angelicum College holds it’s first-ever Virtual Salubong

To start off the celebration, a DP blast was held last August 25, 2020, wherein students from every department and school faculty made use of Facebook profile picture frames created specifically for their department; whilst the Senior High School and College students had frames designated per strand or course. A Facebook Livestream was scheduled the next day to formally start and welcome the learners for this school year.

WOMAN IN POWER: Mrs. Urduja Galang gives her welcome remarks to the UST Angelicum SHS Studentry.

A welcome message from Mrs. Galang inspired and boosted the energy of the students. In order for the new batch of Thomasian-Angelicans to be more familiar with the present clubs they can join, the presidents of each club prepared welcoming messages to entice and encourage the new learners with what their clubs have to offer. On the same day, a live streamed Mass of the Holy Spirit was offered by UST Angelicum College wherein the learners under the institution were encouraged to send their petitions and intentions.

Starting off the school year in a “new normal” way is certainly difficult as everyone surely misses the physical interaction with their friends and schoolmates. Still, life goes on and so does education. Virtual events such as the Salubong managed to help students feel that they will still enjoy this year, even though it was celebrated online. Regardless of the setbacks, may they continue to face the challenges of this academic year with the bravery of a tiger.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Bellicia De Guzman

I am Bellicia Anne C. De Guzman and I am a News Writer for The USTAC Tigercubs. As a writer, I am straightforward, creative, diligent, and eager (in a good way.)

My interest in writing started when I was in Grade 7. I was very fascinated with writing novels, which is why I gave it a try and also ventured in writing opinion articles and song lyrics. When I was in 9th grade, I was able to join the journalism club and had been a News Writer and Editor at my previous school for 2 years, which I believe, honed my skills and love for journalism.

Ever since I was a kid, I loved to jot down my feelings in a small notebook and currently, I am into bullet journaling. I also love to collect colorful writing materials and also washi tapes and stickers for them to artistically represent my mood or emotions when I write it down. Music is one of the things that comfort me, and I really love collecting albums of various artists. I also enjoy making covers of the songs that get stuck in my head.
