Last October 15, 2020, the SHS learners were invited to attend the said webinar organized by Mr. Jacob Floresca, a UST Angelicum College SHS English Language facilitator, with the assistance of Ms. Mariecol Chavez and Mr. Zoren Cruz with hopes of developing critical thinking skills of the students and uplifting their appreciation and understanding for the different genres of 21st Century Literature.

In line with this goal, Ms. Celeste Banawa, a multi-awarded English teacher at the Schola de Vita, was invited to facilitate the webinar and discuss how the learners can further look through various lenses of the different perspectives that 21st Century Literature can offer for them to be able to relate more to what they are reading or watching.

The program was kicked off by Ms. Celeste reminding and helping the students to define literature and further look into and relate to the kinds of perspectives and messages that different literary contexts have.

Among the discussed subtopics, the author’s perspective to help the audience better understand the text presented, and the socio-cultural context wherein the audience would focus on analyzing the sociocultural of the text through their perspective.

Throughout the class discussion, learners were reminded to assume nothing as not every literary text they may encounter is based on real-life situations.

In the latter part of the discussion, the learners tackled and taught literary criticism and the various literary theories. Before testing their learnings and allowing them to use what they have learned and apply it in analyzing A Footnote To Youth by Jose Garcia Villa as a class ender. It would further aid them in understanding and appreciating literature.

When asked for a message for the learners, Mr. Floresca only had one main thing to say, and that is to enjoy literature as according to him, literature will help us to relate and learn from the world for it is the reflection of our time, experiences, history, and many more.

He ended his message by saying, “Let us enjoy reading and watching stories as this will bring us a new knowledge and if not, enhance our knowledge, our perspective. #ENJOYLITERATURE”.

THE AUTHOR

Louise Salgado

Hello! I am Louise Salgado and I am a news writer and one of the managing editors for this year’s publication of the Tigercubs. I’ve been in journalism for 5 years; in 4 of those years, I was a news editor. I like watching thriller movies and series on Netflix. I also enjoy reading books and playing mobile games.

Writing has always been one of my favorite hobbies as it helps me to clear my head and focus on things. I find joy in knowing that I can serve people through writing and sharing what I know. Joining the UST Angelicum Tigercubs was out of my comfort zone as it felt like I was back to zero. But, nevertheless, I am both honored and delighted to have been accepted and chosen to be one of the managing editors for my last year in high school.
