From the Editor’s Notebook
by Trina Galera, Editor In Chief
I have always had a heart for journalism. I love how it greatly affects the society since it is one of the sole foundations on how people acquire information in regards to news and current affairs. Because of my love for journalism, I became the anchor of our broadcasting team back in elementary for three consecutive years. With the aid of my teammates, for those three years we were able to bag our three-time championship in the English broadcasting category. This experience ignited a spark within me that I never knew existed– it was the journalist in me.
I was the editor in chief of our school paper back in sixth grade. I believe this honed me to become both an effective journalist and a leader. I was still a part of our school paper in junior high school but I was more active in photojournalism than writing. Eventually, I wanted to be a lawyer or a leader and everyone around me supported me in this regard. At that time, I slowly outgrew the journalist in me as I have focused more on the student council instead of the school paper. This paved the way for me to become this school year’s Promotions and Communications Committee Head of the Supreme Senior Student Government and the Vice President of the Senior High School Basic Ecclesial Community Youth Volunteers.
Stepping into senior high school as a Humanities and Social Sciences (HUMSS) student, I became more exposed to the truths of society and I began to recognize that dreams do change– as much as I do. I kept asking myself why I wanted to be a lawyer and I cannot seem to give the right answer that comes from my heart. I began to question my life decisions and then one day it hit me– it was definitely a right decision to study under the HUMSS strand. I realized what I genuinely wanted to do when I grew up and that is to become a journalist.
I joined the UST Angelicum Tiger Cubs last school year in hopes that I would be able to rekindle the faded spark of journalist in me. My experience with Tiger Cubs was the major plot twist of my journey and I cannot forget how happy I was when I found out that I am this year’s editor in chief. Trust me, it was an indescribable feeling.
My relationship with journalism has its fair share of ups and downs and it taught me that the future is truly unknown. Our aspirations right now might not be what we want in 5 years or in 10 years time and that is completely okay. Even if your friends already got their lives all pre-planned, it is okay if you are still exploring and figuring things out. Just take your time and trust the process.
The world holds so much uncertainty– this scares us a lot but it must also drive us to look forward into what lies ahead. With a cheerful heart, I want you to spin fearlessly into your next adventure because every leap of faith is worth it. I am looking forward to all the good things you are to experience out there. I am and will always be rooting for you, Thomasian Angelican. Hiraya Manawari.
